Veterinary drugs administered to treat and prevent diseases in food-producing animals may remain present in residual amounts in food products, particularly if drugs are not used as approved or if clearance periods are not followed. This review evaluates current knowledge about the effects of veterinary drug residues on the gut microbiome and assesses the scientific evidence regarding the influence of microbiome disturbances on health.
