Abstract

This edition, which focuses on the highlights of the 35th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government, provides us with pointers on four critical issues to which the Department will dedicate considerable attention this year. Notwithstanding the unprecedented lack of predictability of the last two years, we were able to make considerable progress in the areas of governance, peace and security. In Somalia, we are moving into the next phase of stabilisation with the transition from the African Union Mission to Somalia (AMISOM) to the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), which will commence on 1 April 2022. The new mission will consolidate the gains made by AMISOM and support the Government of Somalia in its state-building efforts through the implementation of the Somalia Transition Plan. In the Lake Chad Basin, the comprehensive efforts deployed by the Lake Chad Basin Commission through military and non-military interventions have yielded positive results against Boko Haram, and addressed some of the drivers of insecurity in the region....
