The article explores the difference between the sixteenth-century visitors' impressions of central Mozambique's alimentary landscape and the grim food security profile, citing the country's overall chronic malnutrition rate despite years of sustained economic growth. It looks into the importance of protected natural resources to household welfare. It also examines the lack of access to potable water as the hunger's underlying cause.
