The African business environment is ever witnessing fluctuating trends that require continuous reflections by all keen observers. In this first issue of 2017, I would like to focus primarily on some specific countries featured - namely Nigeria, Ethiopia, Kenya, Ghana, Botswana and Egypt. It should be noted, however, that the focus on these countries is in no way to discount several other major political and economic developments on the continent in the past year, such as the elections in The Gambia on the political front, and, on the economic front, South Africa's retake of the first position as Africa's leading economy. Indeed, The Gambia would make for an interesting interrogation alongside its neighbour, Senegal, but this is a subject for a future issue of the African Journal of Business and Economic Research.
