The purpose of this paper is to answer the following question: are corporations responsible for protecting the environment? In order to answer this question, this paper addresses the following topics: major oil spills, corporate social responsibility, corporate social irresponsibility, regulations, self-governance, protection of the environment, inequalities in the Niger Delta, and possible improvements to be made in corporate social responsibility efforts. By reading this paper, one will have attained the knowledge that oil corporations have a responsibility to protect the environment. This paper synthesises previously conducted research found primarily through Marist College's library databases. Other sources were found via Google Search if the information could not be located with the library databases.
