Fragility and the State: Post-apartheid South Africa and the State-Society Contract in the 21st Century

Abstract

This article looks at the political system in South Africa and argues that the country is possibly moving towards a condition of state fragility. In particular, the author suggests that the increase in service-delivery protests and the changing nature of politics in the country show that the contract between the state and society is weakening, leading to increasing state fragility.
