After prison: the case for offender reintegration

Abstract

In this monograph, Lukas Muntingh of the National Institute for Crime Prevention and the Reintegration of Offenders (NICRO) examines offender reintegration, first against the backdrop of ht concept of imprisonment" in terms of the conditions in South African prisons. He considers new South African legislation and the implications for offender reintegration within a liberal democracy. Muntingh describes the theoretical view-points underpinning reintegration programmes in some detail, and then illustrates the required characteristics by means of international an local examples. It is hoped that this monograph will illustrate the value of reintegration as part of any crime reduction strategy and will serve to inform both policy makers and practitioners on the way forward.
