Since 1983 Ghana has been in a phase of increased inter-regional divergence with significant concentration of economic activity in cities, especially in the Accra metropolitan area. In the north, the more recent years have been marked by significant human development progress, while some of the human development gap between north and south has been closed. Creating a more dynamic regional economy for Ghana will require increasing security, deepening democracy, improving economic institutions and investment, faster implementation of trade liberalization and reducing barriers to factor mobility.
